TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 15 men's and No. 8 women's track and field teams began competition at the Tucson Elite Classic at Roy P. Drachman Stadium on Thursday.
For the men, junior Tyler Johnsontook first place in the men's hammer throw competition, group B. He threw a season-best mark of 209-7 (63.89m). That is also the second-best throw of his career.
Senior Taylor Bush threw 202-3 (61.65m) in the women's hammer throw competition. That mark was good for fourth place in group B. Bush has now thrown 200-0 or better in five-straight meets this season. In the women's discus, junior Alyssa Hasslen threw 179-0 (54.57m), good for second-place in group B. That is also the second-best toss of Hasslen's career. Junior Taylor Freemancompeted in the discus competition as well, throwing 175-0 (53.33m). Her season-best mark was good for third place in group B and ranks as the second-best throw of her career.
Volunteer assistant coach Jill Camarena-Williamsthrew 64-9.75 (19.75m) in the shot put competition. Her mark was good for first place and is the facility record. The record was previously held by former Wildcat Meg Ritchie, she threw 62-3.75 (18.99m) on May 8, 1993. Camarena-Williams will return to throw on Saturday. She is currently ranked No. 3 in the world with a season-best mark of 65-0 (19.81m).
Hyleas Fountain (Nike) set the facility record in the women's long jump with a mark of 22-1.75 (6.75m). That mark is tied for No. 6 in the world and also meets the Olympic "A" Standard. The record was previously held by Elva Goulbourne (Central Arizona), she jumped 21-6 (6.55m) on March 18, 2000.
Competition will resume on Saturday at Roy P. Drachman Stadium. The meet is set to start at 1 p.m.
