Miccini Advances to Quarterfinals of Aggie Invitational

The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team opened the fall tournament season at the 2012 Aggie Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. Representing the Cats are junior Giacomo Miccini, sophomore Sumeet Shinde and newcomers Matt Dunn and Ben Lee.

In doubles play, Miccini and Shinde teamed up to take on Kyle Plum and Jason Proctor from Abilene Christian in the round of 16. The Arizona duo clinched their first win, 8-1, to advance the quarterfinals. In their second match of the day, Miccini and Shinde topped Germain Degradin and Yannick Black from hosting New Mexico State, 8-5. The two wins places the Wildcat team in the doubles quarterfinals to be played Saturday at 9 a.m.

Dunn and Lee competed in their first match as Wildcats when they took on New Mexico State's Eduardo Cabrita and Stahinja Trecakov. The Wildcat duo earned their first win, 8-4, in round of 16 play. Next, Dunn and Lee played Hans Hach and Borja Cortes from Abilene Christian. The Cats were topped 8-4. With the loss Dunn and Lee fall to the concelation bracket where they will compete Saturday.

In singles action, Shinde took on Abilene Christian's Tucker Muek in round of 32 play. The Pine, India native topped Muek 6-2, 6-4 and moved on to the round of 16. In his second singles match of the day, Shinde earned the first set against New Mexico State's Cabrita, 6-3, but was topped, 6-4, 6-2, in the third and fourth sets. Shinde will compete in the consolation singles draw on Saturday.

Dunn, a Tucson local, earned his first collegate singles win as he topped Naveen Manivannan from New Mexico State, 7-6 (4), 6-2. In round of 16 play he took on Luis Ramirez, also from New Mexico State. Dunn was edged 6-3, 6-2 and will compete in consolation singles play on Saturday.

Lee, a New Cannon, Conn. local took on New Mexico State's Trecakov in round of 32 play. Lee clamed the first set 6-4 but was topped, 7-6 (3), 6-3, in the second and third sets. The loss pushed him to the consolation singles draw where he played Trevor Unger from NAU. Lee clinched the match, 6-2, 6-2 and will advance consolation play.

Miccini became Arizona's most winning player of the day as he defeated two opponents to advance to the singles quarterfinals. In round of 32 play, the Recanati, Italy native beat Abilene Christian's Plum, 6-1, 6-0. In the round of 16, Miccini took on Guilherme Gesser, also from Abilene Christian. Miccini earned his second singles win of the day, 6-3, 6-2 and will compete in the quearter finals Saturday at 1 p.m.
