The Arizona Wildcat men's tennis team sent four players to the 2012 ITA All-American pre-qualifying tournament. Representing the Cats are juniors Giacomo Miccini, Andre Vidaller and Mario Urquidi as well as sophomore Sumeet Shinde.
Play began Saturday with singles play and continued through Sunday. Doubles play is set to begin Tuesday, Oct. 2.
In singles action, Andre Vidaller took on UNLV's Ace Matias in the first round of play. Vidaller dropped the first set, 6-2, but came back to win the second to sets and clinch the match, 6-4, 7-5. In his second match of the tournament Vidaller played Sebastian Bustamante from Loyola Marymount. The Santos, Brazil native dominated the match, 6-2, 6-1, to finish his Saturday on a high note. On Sunday, he played Thorsten Bertsch from San Diego State. Bertsch claimed the first set, 6-3, but Vidaller came back to win the second set, 6-4, his wins would end there as Bertsch clinched the second set and the match, 6-2.
Urquidi began Saturday's play with a bye and took on Vukasin Teofanovic from Marquette University in the second round of play. Urquidi fell is straight sets, 6-0, 6-3. In bonus match singles play, Urquidi played Ahmed Albitar from Bradley. The El Paso, Texas native dropped the first set, 6-2, but answered by claiming the next two sets, 6-2, 6-2.
Miccini began the tournament with a match against Will Davis from Michigan State. Miccini clinched his first win of the day, 7-5, 6-3. In his second match of the day, Miccini played Alvaro Gutierrez from Wichita State. Miccini was topped, 6-4, in the first set but responded by winning the next to sets to claim the match, 7-5, 6-3. On Sunday, the Recanati, Italy native played No.9 Alberto Bautista from Texas A & M. Miccini suffered a 6-3, 6-3 loss to end his singles run.
Shinde began Saturday's play with a bye and played No. 14 Johan Backstorm from Ole' Miss in the second round of play. The Pune, India native claimed the first set 7-5, but was edged in the second two sets, 6-3, 6-0.
