TUCSON, Ariz. – A finishing touch was put on an already solid weekend for the men's tennis team, as senior Fredrik Ask won his third place match and sophomore Matt Dunn won the consolation final Sunday at the Aztec Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
Ask played dominant tennis on the final day, beating Pac-12 opponent Ryoto Tachi of UCLA in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
Dunn went through Caryl Hernandez of UC Irvine to clinch the consolation final, winning the match 6-4, 6-4.
“Overall it was a good tournament,” said assistant coach Arron Spencer. “We are looking forward to having two weeks at home to work on the things we learned this weekend.”
Ask also found success in the doubles bracket with sophomore teammate Naoki Takeda. The pair defeated Arjun Ball and Felix Schueller of Grand Canyon 8-3 to earn a spot in the finals, where they lost to Southern California's Robbie Bellamy and Nick Crystal, 8-3.
Prior to the final, the Trojan duo defeated Dunn and junior Carlos Bermudez, 8-6.
The Cats will have two weeks off from tournament play, returning for the ITA West Regionals Oct. 19-22 in Malibu, Calif.
