TUCSON, Ariz. –Senior Mario Urquidi and junior Sumeet Shinde led Arizona on day two of the Napa Valley Collegiate Invitational, as they both ended singles play with wins.
Urquidi defeated UNLV's Jeff Vongman in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, while Shinde stormed back after dropping the first to win in three sets, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-1, against Willie Sublette, also of UNLV.
“I thought we started out a little slow in both singles and doubles today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “Overall though, all the guys competed very well.”
Senior Kieren Thompson and sophomore Naoki Takeda came up short in their matches against two from UNLV. Thompson lost to Tamas Batyi in three, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 and Takeda was defeated by Denys Pume, 6-1, 6-4.
Arizona lost their two doubles matches of the day, both coming against teams from the University of San Francisco. Bernardo Saraiva and Nils Skajaa barely edged out Thompson and Shinde 8-7(5), while Takeda and Urquidi fell to Christian Brockstedt and Thomas Takemoto 8-3.
The tournament will conclude on Sunday, as the same group of Wildcats will face off in singles against athletes from Fresno State.
