Cats Beat ASU, 42-35; Claim Pac-12 South Title

Box Score TUCSON, Ariz. - No. 12 Arizona (10-2, 7-2 Pac-12) secured the Pac-12 South title with a 42-35 win over No. 13 Arizona State (9-3, 6-3 Pac-12) in the Territorial Cup on Friday. Freshman Nick Wilson was named 2014 Territorial Cup Bob Moran MVP for his three touchdowns and his 178 yards rushing on 24 carries.

“I'm really proud of our guys,” head coach Rich Rodriguez said. “I told them at halftime, it's probably going to come down the last minute so let's get ready to play another 30 minutes. Our senior class deserves a lot of credit for establishing a great attitude and culture in our football program. Here we are, we're where we want to be, playing for a Pac-12 Championship.”

With the Arizona victory and Stanford victory over UCLA, the Wildcats are the 2014 Pac-12 South Champions. The Pac-12 Championship game will be played on December 5 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif.

“I didn't know if this would happen in year three,” Rodriguez said. “But I knew it could happen, otherwise I wouldn't have come here. This is the perfect environment to build one of the best programs in the country. We aren't there yet, but we're on our way.”

The UA defense finished with seven sacks on the day, including two each from sophomore linebacker Scooby Wright III and senior defensive lineman Dan Pettinato. Wright tallied 13 tackles, including five for loss and he forced a fumble, as well. Senior safety Tra'Mayne Bondurant was second on the day in tackles with 11, with one sack and two tackles for loss.

Redshirt freshman Anu Solomon finished the day with 208 yards passing (15-21) and two touchdown passes.

“Anu (Solomon) toughed it out,” Rodriguez said. “He wasn't 100% but he wasn't doing any further damage. He was gutty, made a couple big throws. Anu's a competitor and he's a great leader for being a young redshirt freshman.”

Arizona State started with the ball first, electing to receive after winning the coin toss. After a short run and a pass break up by senior safety Jared Tevis, Arizona State's quarterback Taylor Kelly dropped back to pass on third down. Wright came up from behind to register his 13th sack of the season and his sixth forced fumble. Junior safety Anthony Lopez scooped and scored on the fumble recovery, taking it 25 yards to the end zone. Arizona led 7-0 at the 14:16 mark of the first quarter.

Arizona State began their third drive of the game on the UA 28-yard line after a 25-yard punt by UA junior Drew Riggleman. The Sun Devils' drive was highlighted by a third-down conversion where Kelly found Jaelen Strong for a 21-yard connection to the UA three-yard line. However, ASU tried four-straight running plays but were denied by the Wildcats, resulting in a turnover-on-downs.

On the ensuing drive, Solomon fumbled the snap and Demetrius Cherry recovered it for a two-yard return into the end zone. The game was tied at 7-7 at the 5:56 mark of the first quarter. The drive was three plays, 75 yards and lasted 55 seconds.

Solomon wasted no time making up for his fumble. On the third play of the ensuing drive, Solomon connected with sophomore receiver Samajie Grant who scampered down the field for 69 yards into the end zone. Arizona regained the lead, 14-7 with 5:01 remaining in the first quarter and that would remain the score till the end of the first.

ASU's first offensive scoring drive was highlighted by a 50-yard connection from Kelly to Strong. Kelly found Strong once again for a three-yard reception, this time in the end zone tie the game at 14 with 11:54 left in the second quarter. It was a nine-play, 75-yard drive that lasted 3:13.

Arizona State punted the ball away to Arizona with 5:46 left in the first quarter when redshirt sophomore Tellas Jones blocked it. Arizona took over at the ASU 30-yard line.  Arizona took advantage of the great field position, scoring in 2:05 on four plays. Wilson carried the ball 21 yards on fourth down for the score, giving UA a 21-14 lead with 3:41 left in the first half.

After two-straight sacks by Pettinato and Tevis, ASU was forced to punt it away. Sophomore DaVonte' Neal couldn't cleanly catch the sky-high punt and ASU recovered the fumble at the UA 12-yard line. Three plays later, ASU scored on a seven-yard pass from Kelly to Demario Richard. The scoring drive last 51 seconds and tied the game at 21 with 24 seconds left in the half.

Arizona came out in the second half and marched right down the field for a touchdown. Wilson capped off the drive with a one-yard rush for his second touchdown of the day. The critical play of the drive came just before Wilson's run when Solomon connected with redshirt junior David Richards for a 30-yard reception up the sideline. The drive was nine plays, 75 yards and lasted 2:38. Arizona was back on top 28-21 at the 12:22 mark on the third quarter.

Arizona State marched down the field on the following drive but missed a 45-yard field goal wide left. Arizona responded on the very next play with a 72-yard touchdown run for Wilson. The play lasted 12 seconds and was Wilson's third touchdown of the game. That was the final score of the third quarter and it put the Wildcats ahead 35-21.

The Sun Devils posted a six play, 65-yard drive in 2:13 early in the fourth quarter to make the score 35-28. Kody Kohl caught the two-yard pass with 11:23 left in the game from Mike Bercovici who subbed in at quarterback for Kelly.

Arizona was forced to punt it away and Arizona State began the drive their own 8-yard line. Bercovici then threw an interception to senior Jourdon Grandon who returned it to the ASU 16-yard line. Two plays later, Solomon found Grant in the end zone again, putting UA up 42-28 with 8:31 left in the game.

Bercovici responded with a nine-yard touchdown pass to De'Marieya Nelson with 5:02 left in the game. The Sun Devils' drive lasted eight plays, 78 yards and went 3:24.  McCall intercepted a pass early in the drive but the play was negated due to a penalty on the Wildcats.

Arizona punted it away on the ensuing drive and ASU took over with 2:56 left in the game on their own 43-yard line. The Wildcats stopped ASU on fourth down with 1:07 left in the game. Arizona took over and got in victory formation to seal the win.
