TUCSON, Ariz.--- The University of Arizona women's tennis team is returning to action just two weeks removed from the Wildcat Invitational, as four players are set to travel to San Diego, Calif. to compete in the ITA Southwest Regional Championships beginning on Thursday.
“The ITA regionals are a great opportunity for our team to play another high level event,” head coach Vicky Maes said. “We have been working very hard in practice and I am excited to see how we will transfer this over into real matches. I expect to see mental toughness and lots of heart from everyone out there. Results would be nice but that's not my focus at this stage. We have big goals for the spring and right now it's about learning.”
Competition will begin Thursday at 9 a.m. MST inside of San Diego State's Aztec Athletic Center and will conclude Monday.
Senior Shayne Austin, junior Lauren Marker, freshman Kinga Gartner, and freshman Camila Wesbrooks will be representing Arizona as they compete against the Southwest region's top talent. Marker enters the tournament ranked No. 43 in the country according to the ITA singles preseason poll, and made it to the round of 32 in the ITA All-American Championships last week after defeating University of Florida junior No. 38 Kourtney Keegan. In last year's regional tournament Marker won two matches which was enough to send her to the round of 16.
Last year Austin won her qualifying match of the tournament before falling in the round of 64. Freshmen Gartner and Wesbrooks enter their first ITA Regional with an overall record of 3-1 after dominating at the Wildcat Invitational.
