BERKELEY, Calif. - Concluding its Bay Area trip, Arizona downed California in four sets (25-21, 25-14, 19-25, 25-16).
"It's a good win for us," said head coach Dave Rubio. "We played well. We were really efficient in game 1. I thought we sided out and scored well. We got a little tentative in games 3 and 4, but it was a good win on the road."
Arizona tied its season high with 16 blocks. With a new career high, redshirt sophomore McKenzie Jacobson led the team with 11 blocks.
Junior Kalei Mau helped the team offensively with 19 kills and 58 total attacks. Fellow junior, Penina Snuka recorded her league-leading 14th double-double (39 assists, 16 digs).
Arizona hit .314 in the first set and recorded six blocks to earn the come-from-behind victory in the opener. UA was very efficient on the pins as Mau (7) and Spriggs (4) combined for 11 kills on just 21 attacks. The Cats took the set 25-21.
In the second, Arizona scored the first seven points and 10 of the first 11 before Cal began to chip away. The Bears closed to within 16-13 before the Cats ended the set on a 9-1 run to take the frame 25-14.
The third set proved to be more challenging for the Wildcats. The Golden Bears took the lead early on and held onto it the entire set. California won the third set, 25-19.
Arizona picked up the momentum in the fourth set with the second best hitting percentage of the match, hitting .278. The Wildcats had 14 kills in the final set, leading them to victory, 25-16.
Up Next: Arizona returns home this weekend to take on Washington State and No. 5 Washington. Friday, Nov. 1 the Wildcats will face the Cougars at 6 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 8, Arizona will host Washington at 12 p.m. Friday and Sunday's matches will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
