Cunningham Leads Cats on Day One of John Burns

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men's golf team finished up the first round of play at the John Burns Intercollegiate Wednesday in 11th place at eight over par. Freshman George Cunningham is currently tied for second on the individual leaderboard at four under, one stroke off the lead. Junior Kolton Lapa is hard on his heels tied for 16th place, five strokes off the lead. Rounds two and three will continue tomorrow and Friday at the Wailua Golf Course, starting at 11:30 a.m. MST.
“We had two guys really carry us today,” said head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “George's round was phenomenal especially considering he got better as the winds picked up. Kolton was very solid too as both players took advantage of the par fives at three under and five under respectively. Our team has been challenged by not counting a high score or two each round and today we didn't get enough help in the back end of the lineup.”
Seniors Alex McMahon and Brenden Redfern battled throughout the round with McMahon finishing at five over, while Redfern finished at seven over.
“Alex and Brenden really showed their guts to finish off what seemed like bad rounds with tough pars,” commented Anderson. “The winds blew the last four holes and we didn't give any shots away. That will give us confidence and momentum as we head to round two. We will regroup and rest up for a better team day tomorrow.”
Freshman Jake Kreuz, who is golfing as an individual, posted an excellent round and is just behind the leaders. He shot one under par today, only four strokes off the pace. He's tied for eighth place in the tournament.
