Cats Take Seventh at Lamkin San Diego Classic

TUCSON, Ariz - The University of Arizona men's golf team concluded play at the Lamkin San Diego Classic with a seventh-place finish behind a score of 888 (+24). The Wildcats were led by freshman George Cunningham, who carded a 214 (-2) over three rounds to tie for eighth overall. Cunningham led the tournament in scoring on par fours.
“This week, I was happy with my finish,” reflected Cunningham, “but wasn't happy with how I hit it. I managed to get my ball in the hole just fine but I have a lot of work to do over spring break. The team obviously did a lot better today than yesterday so I think that will give us some good confidence heading into our future events.”
In the third round, the Wildcats were led by freshman Peter Koo, who carded a 71 (-1) thanks to three birdies. Koo finished the tournament at 231 (+15), tied for 62nd overall. Redshirt freshman Jake Kruez posted a 219 (+3) on 11 birdies and an eagle to tie for 23rd. Senior Alex McMahon finished the tournament with a score of 229 (+13), which tied for 52nd place. In the five spot, freshman Max Donohue tallied a 234 (+18) to tie for 68th. Playing as an individual, senior Ricky Lee scored a 251 (+35) to tie for 86th overall.
“Today was a really good round by our team,” noted head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “We were able to play with all five guys the entire day and we executed very well. When the freshmen who struggled yesterday step up and post -1 and +1 (Koo and Donohue), it gives us opportunities to take advantage of strong scores from guys playing well. After a round like today, we feel like we can compete every given day. George played well again this week. It is a great sign when you don't have your best and you keep it around par. Also, we were very proud of Jake's week. He and George are playing with a lot of confidence and it is starting to carry over to other guys as evidence by big rounds today from Peter and Max.”
Next up, the wildcats will travel to Stanford, Calif. to play in the Goodwin Tournament March 26-28.
