
McMahon Leads Wildcats at the Western Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team began play in Santa Cruz, California at the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State University. On the first day, teams played two rounds and the Wildcats were lead by senior Alex McMahon. McMahon shot a 68 (-2) on four birdies and an eagle in the first round and a 71 (+1) in the second to finish the day with a score of 139 (-1) to place him seventh individually. The team scored a 736 to place eighth in the first two rounds.
Freshmen Peter Koo shot his career low in the first round with a 69 (-1) on six birdies, and in the second round shot a 72 (+2). Koo finished the day tied for 12th with a 141 (+1). Both George Cunningham and Jake Kruez shot a 75 (+5) in the first round and a 73 (+3) in the second to tie both of them in 37th with a score of 148 (+8). Senior Brenden Redfern carded a 78 (+8) in the first round and a 80 (+10) in the second to tie him for 83rd with a 158 (+18). Freshmen Max Donohue shot a 85 (+15) in the first round and a 79 (+9) in the second to place him tied for 88th individually with a score of 164 (+24).
“We were very proud of the team today,” noted head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “The course conditions and hole locations are as fast and as difficult as we will see all year. This was a true test of golf and our guys did a great job playing one shot at a time. Peter had a breakout day and the entire team was motivated by his charge. Alex is getting back to his top form too. Our group is going to clean up some of the big numbers and look forward to chasing down a few top teams in this outstanding field. We are happy to be competing and feel like we are close to posting a great team round.”
22 players did not finish the round due to darkness, one the second round will be resumed at 7:30 a.m. on April 12th. The second round will begin tomorrow, April 12th at 8:45 a.m.
