TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team wrapped up their first two rounds of play at the Pac-12 Championships today, sitting in 10th place in the team competition. The Wildcats were led by freshman George Cunningham, who carded a 71 (+1) and a 70 (E) in the first and second round, respectively. This netted him a share of 14th place overall in his first-ever rounds at the Pac-12 Championship. Cunningham helped himself on the Par 3s, topping the list at one under on those 10 holes over the two-round span.
“I feel good about how I played in the first two rounds,” noted Cunningham. “I played solid but I could not get anything going. I am in a good spot going into the second half of this tournament and I am prepared to move up the board with a high finish.”
Senior Brenden Redfern posted a 72 (+2) in the first round and a 76 (+6) in the second round, earning a share of 37th place heading into the third round. Sophomore Jake Kreuz notched a 73 (+3) and a 74 (+4), taking a share of the 41st position. Senior Alex McMahon tallied a 77 (+7) and a 73 (+3) after the rounds today. This was enough for a tie for 54th place. Freshman Max Donohue carded a 79 (+9) and a 73 (+3) in the first two rounds and is in 59th place. Freshman Peter Koo finished with a 79 (+9) and a 76 (+6) today, earning himself a portion of the 66th position.
“We battled in tough conditions today,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “Unfortunately we aren't executing to our full potential. We know we can do better tomorrow and our guys are really determined. Tomorrow, we will focus on trying to free things up. Sometimes you have to try less to get more. I love this group and they are determined to fight until the end. They play for each other and have talent. We need to match that up with some strong scores.”
Play begins again tomorrow at 8 a.m. MST. Live scoring for the round can be found at http://golfstatresults.com.
