Cunningham Ties for 21st at NCAA Regional

TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Arizona freshman George Cunningham concluded play at the NCAA Regional in San Diego at The Farms golf club today, tying for 21st place overall with a 77-74-68=219 (+3). Cunningham's final-round 68 was the best round of the day and tied for the third-best round at the regional. He also tied for the best par 3 scoring across the field.
“Today went very well,” commented Cunningham. “I was able to keep the momentum from my hitting from yesterday and today I just putted a lot better! Those four birdies early really gave me confidence going to the front nine which was the nine I had been struggling with. All-in-all, I am very happy with how I finished today at regionals, and happy I finished my freshman season with a 68.”
Cunningham finished his freshman season with a 71.6 strokes per round average. The 71.6 average ranks second on Arizona's freshman single-season list and is tied for 10th on the all-time list. A second-team All-Pac-12 selection, Cunningham recorded six Top 10s and nine Top 20s, while posting 19 rounds of par or better during his initial year on campus.
“George played a phenomenal round to finish a record-setting freshman year,” remarked head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “He has regularly posted big rounds for our team and he stepped up huge posting the low final round at the NCAA Regional. We are very proud and happy about his play all year and this is a great stamp to close out his first year on what will be an outstanding career. This round gives him confidence and our team can use this to spring board into the future as we gain experience with a young group.”
