SKILLMAN, N.J.--- The University of Arizona women's tennis program was named an ITA All-Academic Team, while senior Laura Oldham also earned ITA Scholar-Athlete status, the Intercollegiate Tennis Association announced on Monday.
Arizona posted an overall team GPA of 3.23 (on a 4.00 scale), while six of seven Wildcats recorded GPAs of 3.10 or higher for the 2014-15 academic school year. Oldham led the way with a 3.50 GPA.
“I'm proud of Laura's dedication to learning,” said head coach Vicky Maes. “Our entire team has a strong commitment to success, but it is not always easy to balance the demands of school and sports. Laura has always held a high standard for herself and it is nice to see our senior recognized for her daily efforts.”
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA member program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All eligible student-athletes whose names appear on the NCAA, NAIA, NJCAA, or CA JUCO eligibility form and have competed in one or more varsity matches must average into the GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2014 and spring 2015).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman thorough senior year).
Oldham was named a Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention back in May, alongside sophomore teammate Lauren Marker. Junior Inge Hendrikx was named to the Pac-12 All-Academic Second Team while she also claimed the Southwest Region's ITA Cissie Leary Award for Sportsmanship.
