TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona men's golf team is traveling to Albuquerque tomorrow to compete in the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate tournament. The University of New Mexico is hosting the event, and they have invited 15 teams from across the nation to compete. The five Wildcats competing in the team competition will be Jordan Gumber, Max Donohue, Jake Kreuz, Andrew Garner and Ari Gulugian. They will be joined by Austin Stadeli, Kolton Lapa, Tyler Moore and Martin Larrea who will be on the links for the individual competition.
Teams will play at the UNM Championship Golf Course, an 18-hole, par-72, 7,556-yard course. The competition will take place over 54 holes, 36 holes on Friday and 18 holes on Saturday.
“Albuquerque is a fun trip for our team,” said coach Jim Anderson. “We get to see everyone play on a championship course in challenging conditions. We have a young group but, fortunately, each of our returners have seen the course. We talked a lot this week about keeping the ball below the hole. Also, we expect to be challenged mentally because the golf course will be stretched with very fast greens. The competition for the spots in the lineup were well contested and our team has a lot of confidence even though we are young. We are working on getting better each week and know we will learn a lot from the week.”
Last year at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate, Arizona finished in 11th at 19 over par. They were led by true freshman George Cunningham, who notched six over par at the culmination of the tournament. New Mexico captured the championship last year.
