Marker moves on to ITA Regional Quarterfinals

Lauren Marker has won all three of her matches and will play in the quarters on Saturday.
SAN DIEGO, Calif. – In the greatest collection of talent the southwest has to offer, Arizona proved it can hang with the best. Six players travelled to the ITA Southwest Regional Championships, presented by Oracle, in San Diego, Calif. Of the six, five advanced twice on Thursday to reach the round of 32, including senior Lauren Marker who is in the quarterfinals. The Cats also sent two doubles pairings into the round of 32.
"Our girls showed solid grit today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "We aren't where we want to be, but our issues are experience related and I feel we will be much stronger with a bit more match play. Our biggest challenge is doubles right now but in singles we are starting to put things together. It was great to see both seniors playing well today. Lauren made it through and will have a good opportunity tomorrow, but Sam simply ran into a better player in the second match this afternoon."
Thursday's tournament action couldn't have gone much better for Arizona, especially in singles. No. 1 seed Lauren Marker had a bye in the first round before cruising to a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UCLA's Kristin Wiley. Devin Chypyha also had a bye, and she knocked off Hawaii's Ali Houbova 7-5, 6-1 in the second round. The last of the Wildcats to have a bye was Samantha Czarniak, and she continued the trend by winning her second round match 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 over Hawaii's Claire Pribylova.
The other three teammates weren't as lucky and had to play in the first round. Camila Wesbrooks squared off against Sarah Nuno of Fullerton in the first round and won 6-2, 6-3. Her next match resulted in a win over SDSU's Olivia Larsson, 6-1, 6-3. Paris Corley also won her first round match, moving past GCU's Tatum Prudhomme 6-4, 6-2. In the second round, she became the third Wildcat to defeat a member of Hawaii's team, as she beat Marina Hruba 7-6(5), 6-4. Marie Van Aelst fell 7-5, 7-5 at the hands of CSUN's Kiryang Kim.
In Thursday's doubles matches, Corley/Marker won their first round match over SDSU's Colvee/Valk 8-2. Van Aelst/Wesbrooks had a bye, as both pairs advanced to the round of 32. Chypyha/Czarniak were defeated in the first round by UCI's Branstine/Nguyen in a close match, 8-7, 7-6(7-4).
Friday's singles action didn't go as well overall. However, Marker proved why she earned the top seed in the bracket. In the round of 32, she eased through a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Hawaii's Petra Melounova. In the round of 16, she once again moved quickly, beating UCSB's Palina Dubavets 6-1, 6-3. She is now in the quarterfinals.
Czarniak was the only other Wildcat to win a match on Friday, defeating SDSU's Jana Buth 7-6, 2-6, 6-4. In the round of 16, she ran into No. 2 seed Mayar Ahmed of Pepperdine. The tough draw resulted in a 6-1, 6-2 loss.
Wesbrooks also faced off against a very tough opponent in the form of No. 3 seed Maeva Razakasoa (LBSU). She wasn't able to pull off the upset and lost 6-3, 6-2. Chypyha was a win shy of squaring off against Marker, but suffered a 6-3, 6-4 defeat to Dubavets. Corley withdrew due to injury and UCLA's Terri Fleming advanced.
In the doubles draw, Corley/Marker fell 8-1 to UCLA's Fleming/Miller. Van Aelst/Wesbrooks had an epic match against USC's Kulikov/Westby, but eventually lost 8-7.
