Baseball Sets Fall Scrimmage Schedule

Tucson, Ariz. -- The Arizona Wildcats baseball program has finalized their fall scrimmage schedule, which will open Saturday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The opening two scrimmages of the fall will be held at Reid Park's Field No. 2 or 4. The remaining scrimmages will all be held at Hi Corbett Field.
All total, coach Jay Johnson's team will scrimmage 18 times from Oct. 8 to Nov. 20. The final three scrimmages will mark the Wildcats' annual Wild vs. Cats World Series. Johnson started the Wild vs. Cats World Series last year in his debut season as Arizona's head coach. The draft for the end-of-fall series will be held Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., at the Sands Club at Arizona Stadium.
The Wildcats are of course coming off an extremely successful 2016 season under Johnson. Arizona went 49-24 last season and advanced to the College World Series Finals versus Coastal Carolina. The Cats captured the Lafayette Regional Championship as well as the Starkville Super Regional title. Johnson and the Cats then won their pod at the College World Series, compiling two wins over Oklahoma State, and one each over Miami and UC-Santa Barbara.
The Cats return several contributors from last year's team as well as an incoming recruiting class that was ranked fourth in the country by Collegiate Baseball. Back from last year's College World Series team are pitchers J.C. Cloney and Cameron Ming, who both shined in the postseason for Arizona. Ming made 10 appearances in last year's postseason with four saves, posting a 2.37 ERA. Cloney tossed 16 shutout innings in Omaha and finished the postseason with a 2.75 ERA and a pair of wins. Also back for the pitching staff this season: Michael Flynn, Cody Deason, Rio Gomez, Alfonso Rivas and others.
Offensively, Arizona returns several key contributors from last season. J.J. Matijevic, fresh off a strong summer in the Cape Cod League, will be on eof Arizona's top threats after hitting .287 last season with 17 doubles, four home runs and 37 RBI. Catcher Cesar Salazar returns for his sophomore season after a freshman campaign that saw him excel behind the plate and bat .276 with nine doubles. Also back are Jared Oliva, Louis Boyd, Kyle Lewis, Ryan Haug, Rivas and others.
Arizona's 2017 season opens Feb. 17 versus Eastern Kentucky at Hi Corbett Field.
