Cats Find Success on First Day of UNLV, SDSU Invitationals

San Diego, Calif. and Las Vegas, Nev. – The Wildcats put forth great performances in two different states on Friday. The team sent five to compete in the SDSU Fall Classic #2 in San Diego, Calif. and three to the UNLV Rebel Tennis Women's Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev.
Head coach Vicky Maes, who is in Vegas, saw some encouraging signs from her players. "I feel we played pretty good tennis today," Maes said. "In the doubles, we kept our composure when it was needed the most and proved we don't have to play great to win. In singles, Lauren played an excellent match, making very few errors and staying in control the entire time. Sam battled hard, winning a very tough first set, earning all the momentum to carry her through. Marie initially competed hard as well but couldn't pull out the close first set. Inexperience showed at that moment as she sort of collapsed mentally, offering little resistance in the second. While Lauren and Sam have competed in college a long time, Marie will have to learn from her mistakes quickly."
Arizona won three of its four matches that it played in Vegas. In singles, Lauren Marker cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over UNLV's Carol Yang. Samantha Czarniak also won in straight sets, with a 7-6, 6-2 win over SMU's Dasha Sharapova. Marie Van Aelst was defeated 7-5, 6-0 by Texas A&M's Domenica Gonzales. In doubles, Czarniak/Van Aelst pulled ofut an 8-6 win over Purdue's Ruedas/Suarez.
In San Diego, Paris Corley defeated UNT's Alexis Thomas 6-3, 6-3. Camila Wesbrooks also won her match, 6-4, 6-0 over KSU's Carolina Costamangna. Maggie Cohen lost a tough battle to UCI's Cassidy Branstine 7-6 (9-7), 6-3. Sophia Thomas fell to UNT's Minying Liang 6-2, 6-2. Elena Schneider was defeated 6-3, 6-2 by KSU's Iva Bago. In doubles, Thomas/Schneider defeated Hall/Tilbury of UCI 6-3. Wesbrooks/Corley were defeated by KSU's Costamangna/Juhasz 7-6(6).
