Wesbrooks, Marker Advance to Finals

SAN DIEGO, Calif. and LAS VEGAS, Nev. – After another day of success for Arizona, the team has a chance to win a championship in both the SDSU Fall Classic #2 in San Diego, Calif. and the UNLV Rebels Women's Tennis Invitational in Las Vegas, Nev. The tournaments will conclude with their respective finals on Sunday, Nov. 13.
Head coach Vicky Maes watched on in Vegas and was proud of her players. "The doubles didn't go our way today," said Maes. "We lost a few key points early in the set and UNLV did a great job pressing our team after that. Credit to them for executing well but we need to do a better job using our skills. In singles, it was another good day for Lauren. She had a slow start but recovered quickly and cruised through. Marie played a much better match today, showed real mental toughness, and pulled out a tough three-setter. Sam played well too but came up a little short. She always brings so much intensity to the court so it hurts to see her lose, but her game is coming along nicely."
As Coach Maes mentioned, the doubles pairing of Samantha Czarniak and Marie Van Aelst dropped their semifinal match to Yang/Zhu of UNLV 8-0. In singles, both Lauren Marker and Czarniak played in the semifinals of their respective tournaments flights. Marker won in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 against SMU's Ana Lopez Perez. Czarniak fought for three sets, but fell to UNLV's Aiwen Zhu 6-4, 3-6, 6-3. In the consolation bracket, Van Aelst pulled off a 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 victory over Purdue's Marta Ruedes.
In San Diego, Camila Wesbrooks and Paris Corley also played in semifinal matches. Wesbrooks faced off against Marina Colvee of SDSU, and won 6-4, 6-0. Corley fell to UNT's Maria Kononova 6-3, 6-0. On the consolation side of the bracket, Maggie Cohen won 6-2, 7-6(2) over KSU's Maria Panaite. Sophia Thomas also earned a victory, 6-1, 6-3 over Alli Valk of SDSU. Elena Schneider matched up against KSU's Palma Juhasz and suffered a 6-1, 6-1 loss. In doubles, Thomas/Schneider dropped their semifinal match to UNT's Liang/Arciniegas 6-3. Wesbrooks/Corley won their consolation match 6-4 over Thoma/Sasaki of UNT.
