Tucson, Ariz. – Jared Oliva reached base four times and Kyle Lewis had a pair of base hits as Team Cats took the opening game of the Wild vs. Cats World Series on Friday afternoon at Hi Corbett Field.
Using Coach Jay Johnson's unique scoring system that rewards solid fundamentals and good execution, Team Cats topped Team Wild 37-1 in the opener of the series that acts as the culmination of fall practice.
Robby Medel, Juan Aguilera and Ryan Gowens all threw for Team Cats in the victory. Medel, a junior from Grand Prairie, Texas, pitched four solid innings, before giving way to Aguilera and Gowens, who combined to get the final nine outs in the seven-inning affair.
The three-game series will resume Saturday at noon. In Friday's game, Lewis, Oliva, Cesar Salazar, J.J. Matijevic and freshman Cameron Cannon all had at least one hit. Oliva scored a pair of runs and Salazar and Lewis each had an RBI.
For Team Wild, Cal Stevenson and Nick Quintana each had a pair of hits. Quintana, a freshman from Las Vegas, also had a pair of RBI. Stevenson, in his first year at Arizona after spending last year at Chabot College, scored a run and drew a walk as well.
Landon Faulkner, a transfer from Chipola Junior College, started for Team Wild and threw 4 2/3 innings. He didn't allow any earned runs and struck out six in a strong start.
Following Saturday's Game 2, the series will wrap up Sunday.
