Tucson, Ariz. – Junior J.J. Matijevic had two home runs and 5 RBI and freshman Matt Fraizer had three doubles as Team Cats took Game 2 of the Wild vs. Cats World Series.
Team Cats has now won the first two games of the three-game series after winning Saturday, 58-15, using Coach Jay Johnson's unique scoring system that doesn't just count runs scored. Using that, Team Wild, having dropped the first two contests, can still come back to win the series Sunday.
But on Saturday, Team Cats proved to be too much at the plate for Team Wild. Matijevic went 4 for 6 at the plate with 5 RBI and three runs scored. He homered twice and was one of four players on Team Cats to have multiple-hit games. Matijevic had one homer go to right field and the other to right-center. Fraizer, a freshman outfielder, went 3 for 6 with four RBI and a pair of runs scored.
Another freshman, Cameron Cannon, also had a three-hit game, going 3 for 6 with a pair of runs scored. Kyle Lewis, Casey Bowman and Cesar Salazar all drove in a run in the victory and Salazar scored a pair himself. Bowman also drew a pair of walks and scored a run to go with his RBI and base hit.
On the mound, sophomore right-hander Cody Deason started for Team Cats and turned in a stellar start. He gave up one hit, one run and a pair of strikeouts over three innings.
For Team Wild, junior outfielder Cal Stevenson had his second-straight two-hit game. Stevenson went 2 for 3 with a pair of runs, an RBI and a walk. Sawyer Gieseke and Seve Romo also drove in a run for Team Wild.
Game 3 is set for Sunday at noon and will wrap up the Wild vs. Cats World Series.
