TUCSON, Ariz. – The C.A.T.S Academics Center announced the Student-Athletes of the Month for October. They are: Women's Tennis' Devin Chypyha, Softball's Mo Mercado, Track and Field and Cross Country's Jeff Gautreau, and Football's Isaiah Strong. These students were chosen because of their commitment to earning their respective degree, their ability to maximize their academic potential, and their dedication to academic improvement and growth.
Â
Members of the C.A.T.S Academics staff made the selections.
Â
Chypyha, a native from Toronto, Canada, is a junior on the team. Last year, she was tied for second in overall wins on the team, besting her record from the previous year, where she tied for third. The 2016 Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention is on track to complete a degree in Biology. Chypyha chose Arizona because she believed that she could reach her potential and improve as both an athlete, and a student.
Â
Mercado, a three time All-Pac-12 recognized player and an All-Academic Honorable Mention, will be earning her degree in Sociology. The senior from Temecula, California is a four-year starter, and will be entering this upcoming season as Arizona's active leader in career hits and a .378 batting average, the second best on the team. Her uncle, Richard Mercado, played baseball at Arizona from 2002-2004 and it has been her dream school since she was a little girl.
Â
Gautreau is a senior on both the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. The local Tucsonian competed in four races in 2016 and finished in the top-five in three of them, and clocked his personal best time at the 5,000-meter at the Willie Williams Classic for a fourth-place finish. He will graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering and when he is not in season, he likes to compete in triathlons.
Â
Strong is a redshirt junior from Phoenix, Ariz. During his time at Shadow Mountain High School, he was a member of the honor roll, principal's list and the National Honors Society, and served as the team captain and MVP during his senior year. Strong sees regular playing time as a cornerback for the special teams unit. He is hoping to graduate with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
