Snuka Named Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week

TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona defeated No. 25 USC and No. 9 UCLA this weekend, sweeping both schools for the season for the first time in school history. Senior setter Penina Snuka played a big part, leading the Wildcats' defensive efforts in both matches. For her performances, she has been named the Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Snuka led the Wildcats, averaging 5.12 digs/set in the two matches. The senior posted 24 digs in Arizona's five-set win over USC, one off her season high, and then added 17 digs in just three sets in the Wildcats' sweep of UCLA.
Against the Bruins, Arizona tallied 78 digs, the most by any Pac-12 team in a three-set match this season and fourth most in the NCAA. Snuka finished second on the team with 17 digs in the match.
The senior posted double-doubles in both matches, adding 47 assists vs. USC and 36 vs. UCLA, good for her 17th and 18th double-doubles of the year. Snuka has a double-double in each of Arizona's last nine matches. The two double-doubles this week tied Snuka for the conference lead – she has led the Pac-12 in double-doubles in each of her previous three seasons in the league.
On Friday, Snuka tied the Arizona career record in sets played with 454 with three weeks remaining in the regular season plus any postseason matches to expand on her record.
For the weekend, Snuka added two kills, three aces and a pair of blocks as she continues to stuff the box scores for the Cats.
On the season, Snuka is averaging 10.46 assists/set and leads the Pac-12 with 1,025 total assists. The senior averages 3.22 digs/set, second on the team and leads the Wildcats with 28 aces. Snuka is second in Arizona history in career digs (1,525) and third in assists (4,804). Snuka is trying to become the second Wildcat ever to collect 5,000 career assists.
This is Snuka's second Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week honor and fourth conference weekly nod overall.
