Cats Run-Rule Southern Utah, North Texas to Move to 3-0

TUCSON - Thirteenth-ranked Arizona softball defeated Southern Utah 10-0 in five innings in its first game of the second day of the Hillenbrand Invitational before run-ruling North Texas, 9-1 in the nightcap.

Game 1 - Arizona 10, Southern Utah 0 (5 innings)

Freshman Taylor McQuillin was brilliant in her Wildcat debut, tossing a complete-game, four-hit shutout, helping Arizona run-rule Southern Utah in the opener, 10-0 (5 innings).

It was Arizona's second victory in as many nights against the Thunderbirds after defeating SUU 10-2 on Thursday night in the season opener, also in five innings.

McQuillin struck out six of the 19 batters she faced in her first collegiate appearance. 

The offense plated its 10 runs on 11 hits, paced by a five-run fifth that included home runs from Mo Mercado and Robyn Porter. 

Game 2 - Arizona 9, North Texas 1 (6 innings)

Nancy Bowling allowed two hits over four innings and settled in to retire 13 of the final 14 batters she faced as she and Michelle Floyd combined to throw a three-hitter in Arizona's 9-1 victory over North Texas on Friday night.

Mandie Perez, Katiyana Mauga and Lauren Young all hit home runs in the game, accounting for seven of Arizona's nine runs. Mo Mercado and Alexis Dotson added RBI in the contest.

Perez and Mercado each recorded three hits in the contest.
