TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team started play at the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Championship in New Orleans today. The Wildcats are at the top of the leaderboard after the round, tied for first place with a 287 (-2). Sophomore Krystal Quihuis and freshman Gigi Stoll led the team today, each with a 71 (-1) after 18 holes. Both Quihuis and Stoll tied for a share of 11th place.
Junior Jessica Vasilic notched a 72 (E) today. Her play today put her in a tie for 14th. Junior Wanasa Zhou followed suit, earning a 73 (+1) in today's round. She is holding a share of 23rd place. Freshman Haley Moore played well today, carding a 74 (+2) and earning a share of the 31st position.
“I think we got off to a really good start,” said assistant coach Derek Radley. “We made the turn at 6-under par. This morning the weather was perfect. There really wasn't a whole lot of wind and we really took advantage of that. We stressed to the team this morning to get off to a good start. As we made the turn, the wind picked up a little bit. The back definitely plays a little bit harder than the front does, but we hung on tough. You just have to get them to grind and keep playing as hard as they can.”
In the individual competition, Senior Lindsey Weaver notched a 75 (+3). She is tied for 42nd place. Her score is not counted as part of the team score.
When asked about keeping this pace up, Radley commented that the team needs to “Just stick to the same game plan. The girls got a good feel today. For a couple of them it was their second time back, so they feel like they know the course and what's going on. Really it'll just be touching up on stuff on the driving range and feeling comfortable for tomorrow. The biggest thing, I think, is keeping the energy levels high for the rest of the week.”
The tournament has been moved up to 8:00 a.m. MST tomorrow due to inclement weather, but the Wildcats will be the first to tee-off.
