
Wildcats Wrap-Up Day One of Northrop Grumman Reg. Challenge

TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona women's golf team began play at the Northrop Grumman in Palos Verdes, Calif., today. The Wildcats are currently in 10th place with a score of 300 (+16). Junior Wanasa Zhou led the team by carding a 70 (-1) after 18 holes, enough for a share of 6th place. Zhou's score was mainly a product of her ability to go low; she managed to capture five birdies.
“Honestly I was feeling that the season came again before I knew it,” commented Zhou. “I was a little uncertain if I had enough time to prepare for this event and keep up the good work I had last semester. Today I was very committed and was certain of my decision when I addressed the ball. I tried this way of thinking and I guess everything worked out well.”
Sophomore Krystal Quihuis brought home a 76 (+5) with the help of a strong par streak on the back name. Her level-headed and consistent play brought her a share of 42nd place. Freshman Haley Moore and senior Lindsey Weaver both notched a 77 (+6) and are tied for 50th place. Junior Jessica Vasilic earned herself an 80 (+9) and is currently holding part of the 74th place.
“It has been a disappointing first day of the spring for the Cats but we have much to build on,” said head women's golf coach Laura Ianello. “Tomorrow we hope to eliminate our 'others' and play smarter. The greens are extremely difficult but after two days of preparing on the greens we are optimistic for a turn around. Wanasa stayed tough and was able to finish at one under and she made a 40-ft. putt for birdie on her last hole today.”
The field of the Northrop Grumman is extremely competitive this year. There were five top ten teams in the lineup, with top-performer Duke taking a share of 2nd place early in the tournament. However, the Wildcats have been known to go low late in the rounds – see the win at the Windy City Collegiate last October.
