TUCSON, Ariz. – The University of Arizona men's golf team finished the final round of The Goodwin with a third round score of 284 (+4) to finish tied for 17th with a score of 876 (+36). The Cats moved up five spots in the final day of competition.
Leading the Wildcats in round three was sophomore Jordan Gumberg, who carded a pair of birdies to close out the front nine, and notched three straight birdies on holes 15-17. Gumberg finished the day three under par with a score of 67 (-3) to end the tournament with a score of 211 (+1) tying for 13th.
“We learned what we need to work on,” commented Gumberg. “Seeing other top teams showed us what we need to do to get better and get to that level of play. Today we had a chance to regroup and 'bear down,' we knew we needed to get a few shots back, and that's what we did. Personally my round today went well, I had a game plan and executed to the best of my ability I stayed patient and waited for my birdies to come. Looking forward, we need to take some positives away from this week and focus on what we need to do to have a good outing at the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.”
Senior Kolton Lapa and redshirt freshman Andrew Garner will end the tournament tied for 50th with a score of 217 (+7). Lapa carded a 69 (-1) coming off five birdies in day three. Garner shot three over in the final day of play, scoring a 73 (+3).
Sophomore Max Donohue finished the third round with a score of 75 (+5). Donohue ends the tournament in 138th place with a score of 247 (+37). Redshirt sophomore Jake Kreuz went nine over in the third round to score a 79 (+9). Kreuz finishes the tournament tied for 131st with a score of 235 (+25).
“Today was much more indicative of the team we can be,” commented head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “We had two guys really step up and lead the way in Jordan and Kolton. Getting two under par rounds was great and we did a better job of keeping the back end of our line up in the round. We have plenty to work on and a few guys at home need to be ready to step up next week because we will see a familiar course in Chandler.”
Up next, the Wildcats will travel to Chandler, Ariz. to compete in the Wyoming Cowboy Classic on Monday, April 4.
