Cats Fall in Wildcat Invitational Opener, 4-2

TUCSON, Ariz. - Arizona softball's offensive struggles continued on Thursday as UA managed just two runs on five hits in BYU's 4-2 victory to open the Wildcat Invitational.

The loss is just Arizona's fourth in the history of the Wildcat Invitational, now in its 19th season. It also marks Arizona's 19th ever nonconference regular season loss - the stadium opened in 1993.

BYU starter McKenna Bull (7-4) allowed just one earned run while striking out nine Wildcats and walking just two. She went the distance in the contest.

Danielle O'Toole (7-3) countered with another solid effort, but took the loss in her complete-game effort. O'Toole allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits with five strikeouts and one walk.

Just four Wildcats recorded hits in the contest, including a pair by Tamara Statman. Ashleigh Hughes and Katiyana Mauga recorded RBI in the game.

Mandie Perez led off the bottom of the first with a nine-pitch walk, stole second and scored on Katiyana Mauga's pop up that fell between two BYU defenders to give Arizona a 1-0 lead in the first.

BYU wasted little time getting the run back as Libby Sugg led off the second with a solo homer, her 10th of the season.

Coco Bond recorded BYU's second hit of the game in the third, another home run to put BYU up 2-1 after 2.5 innings.

Mandie Perez hit a two-out double in the bottom half and scored on Ashleigh Hughes' RBI hit up the middle to tie the game at 2.

BYU broke the tie with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth, including an unearned run plated on a two-out error by the UA defense.

Up Next: The Wildcat Invitational continues with six games on Saturday. Arizona plays at 4 and 6 p.m. vs. Mount St. Mary's and BYU, respectively.
