Moore Leads Wildcats in First Round of Pac-12 Championships

TUCSON, Ariz. – Freshman Haley Moore tied a school record by posting a 6-under 66 on Monday during the first round of the Pac-12 Championships at Ruby Hill Golf Club in Pleasanton, California.
Moore, an Escondido, California, native, has the outright 18-hole lead. She was one shot better than USC's Tiffany Chan, who fired a 5-under 67.
Moore tied Wanasa Zhou's record for lowest round by an Arizona golfer at the Pac-12 Championships. Zhou, a junior on this year's team, fired a 6-under last season on a par-71 course. Moore's round is the lowest ever at the Pac-12 Championships by an Arizona freshman.
“I got off to a solid start with a birdie,” said Moore. “Once I was three-under at the turn, I was in a zone where I was still hitting the ball solid and making puts out there. I plan to pace myself for these next two days.”
Moore will try to protect her lead over the final two rounds of the tournament. Round 2 is slated for Tuesday, with the final round Wednesday. Moore's play helped the Wildcats finish the opening day tied for fourth place at 286 (-2).
The freshman now has six rounds under par this season and one top-ten finish. On Monday, Moore had six birdies, with three on the front nine and three more on the back. She birdied three of the four par-fives on the course and didn't record any bogeys in her round. Her final birdie came on the 182-yard par-three 17th. That got her to six-under and she parred the final hole to post her 66. Her birdie on 17 was one of just two recorded on that hole in the opening round. It played as the second hardest hole with a course-high 20 bogeys.
Moore arrived at Arizona in time for the spring semester after graduating from Pasqual High School in Escondido. She was ranked as the fifth-best golfer in her graduating class and was the Southern California PGA Toyota Player of the Year in 2015.
Elsewhere for the Wildcats on Monday, sophomore Krystal Quihuis earned a 72 (E) on the links, giving herself a share of 22nd place. Senior Lindsey Weaver, freshman Gigi Stoll and junior Jessica Vasilic each carded a round of 74 (+2) in the first round. They are all sharing a tie for 39th place.
Quihuis had two birdies and two bogeys on the front nine and then posted nine straight pars on the back.
Arizona will tee off again Tuesday at 9:00 a.m. PST for round two of the Pac-12 Championships.
