TEMPE, Ariz.- The seventh-ranked Arizona sand volleyball (15-3) took down the Arizona Sun Devils this evening for the second time this season, (3-2) in Tempe, Arizona. The two teams met up in Tucson last week as the Sand Cats defeated Arizona State, (4-1) to close out homestead.
With today being Arizona State's senior day, seniors Nikki Attea, Kalei Mau, Jianna Bonomi and Katarina Schulz were also presented with roses from Arizona State head coach Jacquelyn Bunker.
Cats won three of the matches in straight sets and fell to ASU in two matches today.
The No. 1 team of Madison and McKenna Witt took the match to three sets after a hard fought rally the duo picked up their first loss of the season to the team of Bianca Arellano and Whitney Follette, (21-12, 22-20, 12-15).
Jianna Bonomi and Kat Schulz, the Wildcats' No. 2 pair, dominated on court two as they downed the Sun Devils Kwyn Johnson and Natalie Braun in straight sets, (21-8, 21-17).
Arizona State's No. 4 team of Bethany Wedepohl and Jourdan Parnell picked up a win against Mia Mason and Kalei Mau in a tough fight, (16-21, 17-21).
The Wildcats' No. 3 duo of Sam Manley and Olivia Macdonald battled in the first set, but pulled through and earned a victory against the Sun Devils' Mia Rivera and Madison Berridge (22-20, 21-11).
Hailey Devlin and MacKenzie Kleespies secured the sweep in straight sets beating ASU's No. 5 team of Logan Rae and Frances Giedraitis (21-15, 21-12).
In a close one on court three, Arizona's exhibition team of Tyler Lucas and Nikki Attea fell to the No. 6 team of Blair Robalin and Sydney Palmer in consecutive sets, (21-19, 21-18).
The Wildcats now hold a (7-3) road record and (15-3) overall.
UA continues its road contest next week as they take action in the Pac-12 Tournament in Los Angeles, California on Thursday, April 28 through May 1.
