Gumberg, Kreuz in Top 20; Cats 9th at Pac-12 Championships

TUCSON, Ariz.– The University of Arizona men's golf team competed in the first two rounds of the Pac-12 Championships on Friday. The Cats ended day one of the competition in ninth place with a score of 728 (+18).
Leading the Cats in day one of the competition was sophomore Jordan Gumberg. The sophomore from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, notched a 139 (-3) in the first two rounds of the tournament. The sophomore had an eagle in the opening round of the tournament, as well as netting eight birdies throughout the day to earn him a share of eighth place, seven strokes behind the individual leader from California, K.K. Limbhasut.
“We are really close to playing our best golf as a team," Gumberg said. "Personally I had a good day, with this being one of our strongest fields of competition we have faced this year, my goal for the week is to be competitive, and give myself a chance by the end of the week.”
Redhsirt Sophomore Jake Kreuz finished the opening day of competition shooting a 71 (E) in both rounds played on Friday. Kreuz notched four birdies throughout the day earn him a tie for 20th place. Redshirt Freshman Austin Stadeli notched six birdies in the opening round to score a 149 (+7), setting a career low 18-hole score in the first round (74, +3). The Arizona native is currently tied for 45th place, seven strokes out of the top 20. True freshman Martin Larrea is one stroke behind Stadeli with a score of 150 (+8). Larrea notched six birdies and ended the day tied for 54th.
“We had an up and down day as a team,” said head men's golf coach Jim Anderson. “We are working very hard to stay patient and play with no expectation for performance. If we can approach each shot using creativity and imagination, we can execute our best. This tournament is only at halftime and this is a fun group to be around. The morning round was solid and we can build on that going into the second half of the championship. Jordan and Jake lead the way today and I couldn't be more happy to see it. These two have played every event for us this year and their experience is really starting to show. The others are close too so I believe our best is coming.”
Sophomore Peter Koo is currently tied for 64th place with a score of 153 (+11). Senior Kolton Lapa ends the first day in 71st place with a score of 159 (+17).
The Cats tee off tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. MST for 18 holes of golf on day two of the competition.
