Marker, Corley and Van Aelst Move on at the Battle at the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Wildcats had a great kickoff to their 2016 Fall season, placing three players into the quarter finals at the Battle in the Bay Classic. No. 37 Lauren Marker, Paris Corley, and Marie Van Aelst moved on, while Devin Chypyha suffered a loss.
Freshmen Corley and Van Aelst also advanced in straight sets, defeating Isabella Von Ebbe of UC Davis (6-4, 6-2) and
Cristina Saenz de Buruaga of Pacific (6-3, 6-0), respectively. If each wins their next match, the two would face off in the semifinal.
Chypyha battled Santa Clara's Daniella Silva, but came up short. She fell in straight sets (6-0, 6-2), but will have the opportunity to rebound with a doubles match tomorrow.
UP NEXT: Friday will be a busy day for Arizona, as the singles tournament continues and the doubles action kicks off. Marker and Corley, the highest seed in the bracket, will face off against Santa Clara's Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva. Chypyha and Van Aelst, the number two seed, will go up against Pacific's Yuki Asami and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga. Both matches are scheduled for 9:45 a.m. MST.
In the singles draw, Marker is matched up with Pacific's Lani Rae Green at 1 p.m. MST. Corley will battle Emily Maxfield of San Francisco at 1:30 p.m. MST. Van Aelst draws Anna Sokiran, also of San Francisco, and also at 1:30 p.m. MST.

"I was very happy with our freshmen today," head coach Vicky Maes said. "It's not easy to go out there and manage your first match emotions but they handled it well. Both Marie and Paris made a strong impression. Lauren played a good first round as well. Devin was shaky from the beginning and couldn't convert the deuce points. The score doesn't reflect how close the match was, but Devin needs to be able to handle herself better on those key points."
