Day Two of the Battle in the Bay Classic in the Books

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Another day, and three more wins in the singles draw for the Wildcats. No. 37 Lauren Marker, Marie Van Aelst, and Paris Corley all won again to move on to the semi finals. Arizona is well represented, as three out of the four semifinalists in the Battle of the Bay Classic wear the block A.
"The Cats were on fire in singles today," said head coach Vicky Maes. "Lauren and Devin played smart tennis and really dominated their opponents. Marie had to dig deep and show true heart to defeat the 3rd seed in a tough 3-setter. And Paris started slow but finished really solid. Overall, I was truly impressed with everyone's performance. We did okay in the doubles too but mostly I wanted to see great play in singles."
Marker cruised once again, winning in straight sets (6-0, 6-2) over Lani Rae Green of UC Davis. She advances to face Daniella Silva of Santa Clara in the semis.
Corley also won in straight sets, though it took a tiebreaker in the first [7-6(5), 6-1] to take out Emily Maxfield of San Francisco. Van Aelst faced a longer battle, as it took all three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) before knocking off No. 3 seed Anna Sokiran, also of hometown San Francisco.
In doubles play, Marker and Corley breezed past Santa Clara's Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva (8-4). They move on to the semifinals of the doubles bracket. Devin Chypyha and Van Aelst weren't able to find the same success, falling in the tiebreak to Pacific's Yuki Asami and Cristina Saenz de Buruaga [8-7(1)].
UP NEXT: Doubles will once again kick off the day on Saturday, as Marker/Corley face Maxfield/Treyes Albarracin of San Francisco at 9:45 a.m. MST. The winner will move on to the finals.
In the singles draw, Marker will have the opportunity to avenge Chypyha against Silva of Santa Clara at 1:30 p.m. MST. Meanwhile, in the other semi final, Corley and Van Aelst will face off in a friendly-fire match, also at 1:30 p.m. MST.
