Marker and Corley to Face off in the Finals at Battle in the Bay Classic

SAN FRANCISCO – While the day on the calendar changed from Friday to Saturday, the Wildcats repeated their dominance in the semifinal rounds at the Battle in the Bay Classic. No. 37 Lauren Marker and Paris Corley paired up to advance into the finals of the doubles draw. In the singles bracket, top-seeded Marker moved on yet again and will face off against Corley, who narrowly defeated Marie Van Aelst, to decide the championship.
"The Cats performed very well today, both in doubles and singles," said head coach Vicky Maes. "Lauren played solid all day, Devin (Chypyha) made progress in her matches, and the freshmen did well too. It was unfortunate Paris and Marie had to face off, but they competed hard and it was a close battle that could have gone either way. Like I said earlier this week, I'm very impressed with these two freshmen. Tomorrow will be another Wildcat showdown, this time between Lauren and Paris, but first they will team up to try for the title in doubles.
Marker and Corley, the highest-seeded pair, showed why they were given the No. 1 seed. The two made quick work of host San Francisco's Emily Maxfield and Joselyn Treyes Albarracin (8-2). The victory places them into the final round.
In singles, Marker once again won in straight sets. This time her victim was Santa Clara's Daniella Silva, who she dispatched rather quickly (6-2, 6-3).
The other semifinal featured a battle between teammates, as Corley and Van Aelst faced off to earn a spot in the final. It was a closely contested match as it went to a third set tiebreak. In the end, Corley was just able to prevail [4-6, 6-2, 7-6(2)].
UP NEXT: The doubles championship is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. MST Sunday morning. Marker/Corley will take on Shanna Dos Santos/Anna Sokiran, who represent host San Francisco. A victory would not only give the Wildcats pairing the championship, but also consecutive victories over the hometown team.
In the singles draw, Arizona is guaranteed to finish with both the champion and the runner-up. Doubles partners Marker and Corley will face off at 10:30 a.m. MST to decide some ultimate bragging rights.
Devin Chypyha will also be competing in the consolation finals at 10:30 a.m. MST.
