Arizona Grinds out 56-55 Win Over Washington State

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats (11-6, 2-4 Pac-12) came from behind to beat the Washington State Cougars (8-10, 3-4 Pac-12) by a score of 56-55 on Sunday afternoon in McKale Center. LaBrittney Jones hit the game-winning basket with 30 seconds left.

"I think winning at home is essential," head coach Adia Barnes said. "We have to win at home. To go on the road, steal one in Utah and come home and win at home is big because look how many teams across the Pac-12 have one win. To get these wins at home is important."

Jones scored a team-high 15 points on the night, which included 10 in the fourth quarter alone. Jones hit the game-winning shot with 30 seconds remaining on a put back after a missed jumper. The senior also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, had three steals and blocked two shots.

Malena Washington kept Arizona in the game early as she scored 10 first-half points. The senior would finish the game with 13 overall and hit three three-pointers. She has now made at least one in eight-straight games.

Breanna Workman was effective today as she scored 11 points and had five rebounds. Workman also blocked two shots in 29 minutes.

Arizona was outstanding on the defensive end as they forced 24 Cougar turnovers today. Seven of those Washington State turnovers came in the fourth quarter with three of them coming in the final 2:20 of the game. Those final three turnovers at the end of the game helped Arizona finish the contest on a 10-4 run.

It was a messy first quarter as the two teams struggled to score in the first 10 minutes. Washington State would take a 14-11 lead into the second quarter and forced Arizona to turn the ball over nine times as well. The second quarter was also low scoring as the two teams combined for 26 total points. After 20 minutes of action, the Cougars were up 28-23.

The Wildcats chipped away again as they cut Washington State's lead to 39-37 at the end of the third quarter. Arizona was looking like they were going to have a 37-36 lead going into the fourth quarter, but Washington State's Caila Hailey banked in a buzzer-beating three-pointer.

The fourth quarter was one for the books as Arizona hit the game-winning shot with 30 seconds left on a put back by Jones. After Jones hit the shot to take the lead, Washington State had two free throws with seven seconds left to try and tie it up. McClure hit her first free throw, but would miss the second after the Cougars called a timeout. Destiny Graham grabbed the rebound and was fouled with four seconds left. She missed her two free throws and Washington State's last-second shot attempt did not find the basket, giving Arizona their first home conference win of the season.

This will be the last time fans can see the Wildcats in McKale Center in the month of January as they are set to hit the road for two straight weekends. The first stop will be the Bay Area as Arizona will face the Stanford Cardinal on Friday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m. MST in Maples Pavilion.

"If you look at our conference schedule, it is one of the hardest," Barnes said. "We are on the road for two weeks in a row, but when you find a way to split a week or get the sweep it helps. This was a huge win and we are going to try to go steal one here and there because it is really hard to get Pac-12 wins. Every team top to bottom is solid."
