Cats Cannot Complete Comeback at Cal

BERKELEY, Calif. -- Down 0-2 at the intermission, Arizona volleyball stormed back out of the break, winning the third and fourth sets, but could not complete the comeback, falling in five sets at Cal on Sunday (25-19, 25-20, 15-25, 22-25, 15-11).

Three Wildcats finished with double-digit kills, led by Kendra Dahlke's season-high-tying 19. Elizabeth Shelton had 13 and Paige Whipple 11. Dahlke and Whipple each notched their fourth double-doubles of the year. Dahlke had 10 digs, Whipple had 12.

Julia Patterson also had a double-double, her sixth of the year. Patterson had a career-most 58 assists for the match, paired with 10 digs. UA had 60 digs as a team, led by Makenna Martin's career-high 16 digs. Martin spent most of the match as UA's libero.

Candice Denny was impressive off the bench for the second straight match. She had seven kills on 14 error-free swings (.500) to go along with four blocks. Both were career highs.

UA had 14 more kills than the Bears, but Cal outblocked UA 14-6 in the match and also benefited from 18 Wildcat service errors.

Arizona, which fell to 7-6 (1-3 Pac-12) on the year, will now return home for two consecutive weekends. First up, the Cats will host a pair of ranked foes, UCLA (Wednesday) and USC (Friday). Cal improved to 11-4 (2-2 Pac-12).

The Bears defeated the Cats 25-21 in the first set, hitting .406 to UA's .257 along the way. Kendra Dahlke led Arizona with eight kills on .583 hitting while Julia Patterson assisted 15 of UA's 16 kills.

The Wildcats opened the second set hot, but were unable to sustain their efficient offense as Cal came back late to win the second set, 25-20.

Arizona responded with a convincing 25-15 victory in the third set to force No. 4. UA hit .360 in the frame.

The Wildcats won the fourth, 25-22 to force a fifth set, but fell, 15-11 in the fifth.
