TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona quarterback
Khalil Tate was announced as one of 15 semifinalists for the Walter Camp Player of the Year Award, it was announced Wednesday morning. The Walter Camp Player of the Year is voted on by the 130 FBS head coaches and sports information directors.
A list of five finalists will be released on Nov. 29, and the winner will be announced on Dec. 7. Tate is one of six quarterbacks to be included as a semifinalist and one of four Pac-12 players to be selected. Arizona's sophomore quarterback was also just one of four underclassmen to be selected as a semifinalist.
Tate, who didn't take over as Arizona's starting quarterback until early October, has burst onto the national scene with some record-breaking performances and breathtaking play. In eight games – five starts – Tate has rushed for 1,293 yards and 11 touchdowns on just 111 carries. He's averaging 11.6 yards per carry and is the first quarterback in conference history to rush for 1,000 yards in a season.
Tate has also thrown for 998 yards and eight touchdowns, and ranks No. 1 in QBR in the nation. Tate is also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and the Davey O'Brien Award and earlier this season became the first player in league history to win four-straight Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors. He's already seventh on Arizona's single-season rushing list with his 1,293 yards and is the first player in school history to post three 200-yard rushing games in a season.
Tate is second nationally, averaging 161.6 yards per game and is seventh nationally with his 1,293 rushing yards. The Inglewood, California native is averaging 51.9 yards per touchdown run and 41.0 yards per touchdown play on 19 total touchdowns.
The phenom has five 70+ yard runs in his past six games, including an 82-yard run, which is the longest in the nation by a quarterback this season.
