TUCSON, Ariz. – After being selected to the Pac-12 All-Conference First Team and Pac-12 All-Freshmen team, Arizona forward
Lauri Markkanen picked up a litany of national honors. Markkanen was honored as a Third Team All-American by Sporting News, USA Today and NBC Sports.
The Finland native spent much of his freshman season leading the Wildcats in scoring, rebounding, three-point field goal percentage and free throw percentage. He finished the regular season averaging 15.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while shooting 42.8 percent from beyond the arc and 83.7 percent from the free throw line.
Markkanen was a two-time Pac-12 Player of the Week during the season and was named the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week following UA's road sweep of USC and UCLA. The 7-footer averaged 20.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in the pair of wins and connected on 63.6 percent of his shots from the field and 80.0 percent of his three-pointers.
He was also named to the USBWA's All-District Team for District IX. Markkanen's selection to the All-District team marks the seventh consecutive season a Wildcat has earned the honor. He is the third UA freshman to earn the honor in that seven-year span, joining Stanley Johnson in 2014-15 and Aaron Gordon in 2013-14.
Arizona is off to the 2017 Pac-12 Conference Tournament in Las Vegas as the No. 2 seed. The Wildcats are the winningest program in the history of the conference of champions' tournament.
