That's What She Set: Q&A with Hailey Devlin

As a consistently focused player, Hailey Devlin has her own tactics to staying on top of her game. Mindset seems to be a key factor in her successes. Devlin makes sure to keep her eye on the prize, aspiring to win each game and simply get to 21 first. In addition to cheering on her fellow Sand Cats, Hailey is known for leading by example and getting the job done.

With her sweet personality, she stands as a silent warrior. She earned her position on the USA Junior National Beach Team, was elected team captain, and played All-Conference and All-CIF 1st  team her senior year of high school. Entering the U of A, Hailey made an impact right away with a record of 20-6 her freshman year and a 20-5 record her sophomore year. Hailey will not stop there, for she is always looking to improve and take on the competition with an aggressive approach.

ArizonaWilcats.com sat down with junior Hailey Devlin from San Diego, Calif. To learn more about her game.

Q: What brings you to Tucson from San Diego, California?

A: "I came from San Diego to Tucson because I love the school, the people here, and the facilities are really nice as well."

Q: How has your transition been from sophomore to junior year?
A: "It was a little rough at the beginning because we had new coaches and a new system, and school is harder because I am going into the classes for my major, but now, everything is going smoothly, and I've improved a lot in volleyball."

Q: What are some personal improvements you want to focus on for this upcoming weekend versus Stanford and Cal?
A: "For this upcoming weekend, I want to focus on staying aggressive against the competition no matter who we're playing and working on serving aggressively to get steals from the other team."

Q: What's it like playing with Sam Manley since you two have known each other for so long?
A: "We have such good chemistry because we have known each other for so long. She's super nice and we get along great, so it works on the court."

Q: What is your earliest beach volleyball memory?
A: "My earliest beach volleyball memory is when I went to the Misty May-Treanor camp when I first began playing. I met her and got to play with her, so that was really cool."

Q: Do you have any pre game rituals?
A: Yes. I am really superstitious, so I do the same thing for each game. I have to have all of my ducks in a row."

Q: Who or what is your motivation?
A: "My motivation is really proving to myself that I can do it and working hard to where I need to be."
