TUCSON, Ariz. -- The Wildcats fourth win of the year got off to a slow start, but a strong performance in singles propelled them to a 6-1 victory.
 
The Arizona freshman pairing of Igor Karpovets and Carlos Hassey got the Wildcats off to a good start with a 6-2 win over graduate student Lucas Marinelli and senior Oliver Poysti of San Francisco.
 
The Dons responded with a pair of victories of their own to take the doubles point. San Francisco sophomore Mert Zincirli and senior Johan Joenhagen beat Arizona junior Jonas Maier and freshman Aaro Pollanen 6-3. The duo of sophomore Paul Giraud and junior Ryan Marker (USF) edged out the Arizona pairing of sophomore Alejandro Reguant and freshman Filip Malbasic 7-6(4).
 
After losing the doubles point, the Wildcats went on to win every singles match in straight sets.
 
"I think in singles, we played like a veteran group, even though we had a bunch of younger guys in the lineup," head coach Clancy Shields said. "I was really pumped for Igor. He came out and played really maturely. Him and Alejandro really set the tone for us in singles."
 
Karpovets and Reguant dropped only one game each in their matches, and Malbasic won 6-2, 6-2 to bring the Wildcats within one point of clinching the match. After a competitive first set, senior Trent Botha rolled to a 7-5, 6-1 victory, which sealed the match for the Cats. Maier and Hassey each won their singles matches, and by doing so maintained their perfect singles records on the young season.
 
With the win, Arizona men's tennis moves to 4-1 on the year, with another match coming up on Sunday against Saint Mary's.
