No. 3 Gonzaga Knocks Off Arizona 91-74 in Maui

Justin Coleman matches a career high with 28 points in the loss.

LAHAINA, Hawaii (AP) - Rui Hachimura scored 24 points, Zach Norvell Jr. added 20 and No. 3 Gonzaga earned a spot in the Maui Invitational title game with a 91-74 win over Arizona Tuesday night.

Gonzaga (5-0) was out of synch late in the first half after a good start, falling into an eight-point hole.

The Zags turned the Lahaina Civic Center into The Kennel West early in the second, the cheers growing louder with each basket during a 15-2 run that put them up 56-53.

Two-time Maui champion Arizona (4-1) fought back to keep it close, but only for a little while. Gonzaga went on another run, pushing the lead 79-67 and kept the Wildcats at bay from there.

The Zags will face five-time Maui champion and top-ranked Duke in Wednesday's title game.

Justin Coleman had 28 points for Arizona, which had three assists on 21 made field goals.

Notes

  • Senior guard Justin Coleman tied his career high with 28 points Tuesday night. Coleman's previous 28-point outing came while he was at Samford versus Chattanooga. Coleman's six made 3-point field goals are a new career high. His previous high was five, set twice. Coleman needed just 12 shots to get his 28 points and was 8 for 8 from the free throw line.
  • In two games at the Maui Jim Maui Invitational, Coleman is averaging 23 points per game. Coleman is 10 for 17 from 3-point range in two games and 14 for 25 overall from the floor.
  • Sophomore guard Brandon Randolph had 19 points Tuesday and has scored in double figures in all five games this season for Arizona. Randolph scored in double figures just four times last season as a freshman. Randolph was 9 for 10 on 2-point field goals Tuesday. Randolph is leading the team in scoring on the season at 17.2 points per game.
  • Freshman guard Brandon Williams had 15 points in 34 minutes Tuesday. Williams was 8 for 9 from the free throw line. In Maui, Williams is 17 for 19 from the free throw line. He is 32 for 37 (87 percent) in five games this season.
  • Arizona is now 13-7 all-time in Maui.
  • Arizona will now face Auburn in the third place game. The two programs have met just once before with Auburn winning 73-63 in the opening round of the 1986 NCAA Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.
  • Coach Sean Miller is 2-0 all-time against Auburn. Miller faced the Tigers on Jan. 6, 2008 and again on Dec. 3, 2008. Xavier won the first game, 80-57 and 81-74.

Quotes
"I just play my game and I just took the open shots that I had. And my teammates played a big part in that, they created shots for me and also like they had to guard, Brandon (Randolph) went up and Brandon Williams who also led the team in scoring the first four games, so they just helped my game a lot easier." – Justin Coleman

"They were great, they're a very balanced team. They can hurt you from behind the arc, they really are terrific in transition and there aren't many guards that are more experienced or better than Josh Perkins. He can score, he can make his teammates better, he's averaging eight assists a game and you can really see how he can do that. He's got a great group to play with, but it's hard to hold them down for 40 minutes from behind the arc. Again they were 2-11 from three at the half, maybe they missed a couple open ones, but our defensive effort and the togetherness through the first 20 minutes, we needed to be able to do that for 40 and we didn't have it in us." – Head Coach Sean Miller

"He's playing with a lot of confidence. I think last night kind of fed into tonight's game. Thank goodness he was able to score the ball. A big reason we had the lead in the first half and why we were able to score at all in the second half was because of his efforts. But we have to be more balanced. Being able to get the ball inside, being able to drive the ball, pass, share it, that's the types of things that we have done well over the years and we have to kind of get back to being that team." -- Head Coach Sean Miller
