TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona women's basketball team finished up exhibition play on Monday night with a 78-41 win over the Western New Mexico Mustangs.
Dominique McBryde led the way with 17 points and seven rebounds.
On the night, Arizona shot 52% from the field and held Western New Mexico to 26% shooting. The Wildcats caught fire from deep, making 11 of their 21 attempts.
Lucia Alonso and
Bryce Nixon combined to shoot 6-7 from downtown.
Arizona's frontcourt was a constant issue tonight for the Mustangs as
Cate Reese pitched in another double-double to go along with McBryde's 17 points and seven rebounds. Reese finished the game with 11 points and 12 rebounds.
Aari McDonald was good again, scoring 17 points, dishing our four assists and swiping two steals. Nixon's three three-pointers were nine of her 12 points off the bench.
Alonso hit three three-pointers in the first quarter and helped Arizona get out to a quick 20-5 lead. The defense was stout for the Wildcats in the first quarter as well, holding Western New Mexico to 1-13 shooting.
The second quarter was much closer, but Arizona was able to extend the lead to 39-20 going into halftime. McBryde led the Wildcats in the first half with 13 points and seven rebounds.
Arizona ended the third quarter on 14-2 run to take a 63-33 lead into the fourth quarter and maintained the lead throughout the fourth quarter to cruise to an easy victory.
The Wildcats will open the 2018-19 regular season on Friday, Nov. 9 at 6:30 p.m. MST against Idaho State.
