Five Wildcats Named Pac-12 All-Academic Honorable Mention

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Five Wildcats were named to the Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention, the conference announced. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Shardonee Hayes, junior libero Makenna Martin, junior setter Julia Patterson, senior defensive specialist Victoria Svorinic and sophomore outside hitter Paige Whipple were honored by the conference for their athletic and academic achievements.
Martin, Patterson and Svorinic are all making their second straight appearance on the Pac-12 all-Academic honorable mention while Hayes and Whipple are making their first appearance.
Hayes, a redshirt sophomore from Columbus, Georgia has a 3.35 GPA while majoring in Criminal Justice Studies. The middle blocker had a breakout season in 2018 in her first season as a starter for the Wildcats. Hayes averaged 1.17 kills/set on .363 hitting offensively while adding 0.76 blocks defensively. Hayes had seven matches with five-or-more blocks on the season, second most on the team.
Martin, a junior from Gilbert, Arizona has a 3.26 GPA while majoring in Mild Moderate Disabilities. The libero led the Wildcats, averaging 3.51 digs/set, 10th most in the Pac-12. Martin's 404 total digs this season are 11th most in a season in school history. Martin had a team-most 23 matches with at least 10 digs on the season.
Patterson, a junior from Los Alamitos, California has a 3.54 GPA while majoring in Finance. The setter had an all-Pac-12 season in 2018; she sits fourth in the Pac-12, after averaging 10.74 assists/set this season. Her 1,343 assists are 11th most in a season in school history and currently 16th most in the NCAA this season. Patterson leads the Pac-12 with 19 double-doubles.
Svorinic, a senior from Scottsdale, Arizona, has a 3.37 GPA while majoring in Political Science. The defensive specialist appeared in 73 sets this season and tabbed career highs in assists (6), aces (7) and digs (26). Svorinic is set to receive her degree this May and plans to go to law school after graduation.
Whipple, a sophomore from Salem, Oregon, has a 3.44 GPA while majoring in Nutritional Sciences. The outside hitter finished second on the team with 3.13 kills per set. Whipple posted career highs in kills (3.13/set), digs (2.32/set), assists (0.19/set), aces (0.09/set) and total points (378). The sophomore had 18 matches with 10-or-more kills, including two 20-kill outings.
