Arizona in Top Ten After Day One of John Burns

LIHUE, Hawaii.- Arizona had a very steady first day of the John Burn Intercollegiate, where the Cats are in eighth place after the first day at even par (288). Leading the Wildcats is sophomore David Laskin, who is currentlty tied for second place at five under.
"We got off to a great start in our round and they guys did a good job playing the par 5s well today," said head coach Jim Anderson. "David was outstanding and he kept giving himself chances by hitting the fairway and making aggressive swings at good targets into the green. His round really saved us today and we will see great things from others tomorrow. We need to finish better and also do a little better job erasing big numbers. We didn't have our best across the board, but we have a lot of golf to play."
Laskin, who posted a 67, was a steady force for the Wildcats throughout the first round. The California native ranked in the top five in par 4 and par 5 scoring. Laskin had seven birdies on the round, where he finished second in the individual field in birdies scored.
"I played really solid today," commented Laskin. "I was fortunate enough to get off to a good start with my ball striking that gave me a lot of good looks at birdie. I started off with four birdies in a row in my first four and then just kept playing solid as the round kept going. The team is looking good and I believe we will be able to get it going tomorrow to get ourselves into contention for the final round."
Sophomore Brad Reeves and freshman Trevor Werbylo finished the day in a tie for 34th place at one over par. The two combined for eight birdies on the day. Werbylo ranked second in par-3 scoring and Reeves ranked second in par-5 scoring.
Senior George Cunningham finished the day tied for 61st at three over par. Freshman Tianlang Guan ended the first round tied in 69th (+5).
Individual Travis Fredborg is tied for 34th at one over and Briggs Duce tied for 46th at two over par.
