LIHUE, Hawaii- Arizona climbed the leader board in the second day of the John H. Burns Intercollegiate after going 10 under par to score 278, the lowest score of the field. Sophomore David Laskin continued his successful play from round one and stayed in a tie for second place.
"Our team did a great job of demonstrating patience today," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "We didn't have a particularly good start but we took advantage of scoring opportunities on the back nine to post a great score. We feel very comfortable on this course and our guys will be ready for their best round tomorrow. David [Laskin] was so solid again and he has really impressed our team with his ability to score in various conditions."
Laskin stayed at the top of the Cats scorecard after going three under on the round for a score of 69. The sophomore entered the round tied in second, and kept his top five ranking with 6 birdies. Laskin ranked in the top three for par 3 and par 4 scoring and was the leader in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.13 per hole.
"I played solid round again today," said Laskin. "I started out a little slow with a double bogey, but I stayed patient throughout the round to wait for my opportunities to make birdies. The course is set up to where if you are patient, the birdies will fall into place. The team was able to put up some good rounds with George [Cunningham] and Trevor [Werbylo] shooting under par as well. We put ourselves in a great spot for tomorrow's final round and hope we can stay patient and finish strong!"
Freshman Trevor Werbylo rose from 34th place to a tie for 15th after going four under on the round and scoring 68. The Tucson native had the lowest score of the round for the Wildcats and had the only eagle for the team on the 535 yard par 5, 9th hole. Werbylo ranked in the top three in par 3 and par 5 scoring and averaged 3.7 on the day.
Senior George Cunningham went three under par, notching a 69 on the round and making even par on the tournament. Cunningham birdied four times in the second day of the tournament and ranked in the top five individuals in overall par scoring, par 3, and par 4 scoring.
Sophomore Brad Reeves had a score of 73 (+1) and tied for 47th. Freshman Tianlang Guan finished the round tied in 60th at even par.
Individual competitors Briggs Duce and Travis Fredborg enter the last day of competition in a tie for 26th and 33rd.
