LIHUE, Hawaii- Arizona closes out play at the John Burns Intercollegiate tied in fourth place, with a score of 858, six under par. The Cats had two top ten finishes in senior George Cunningham, who placed 6th at six under par, and sophomore David Laskin, who tied in 7th at four under.
"Today was a challenge for our team," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "We learned a lot about ourselves and despite a tough start, we managed a team score to keep us near the top of the field. We know we need to improve in areas to be capable of being at the top again. George had a great week highlighted by an awesome round today. He was so patient all week and continues to impress."
Cunningham played a strong final round, going five under to score 67 in the last day of the competition. The senior finished the second round tied in 33rd and rose to the top ten with five birdies and one eagle in the final round. Cunningham ranked in the top five in par 3, par 4, and par 5 scoring and totaled 11 birdies in the tournament. This is Cunningham's second top ten finish this spring, after finishing second in the Arizona Intercollegiate.
"The team didn't quite play the way that we wanted but it was still a pretty good finish!" said Cunningham. "Coming in fourth with as many teams that were here is a good way to finish. As for me, I am excited to have gotten another top 10 finish, especially with my first round. I'm looking forward to the NIT and I just need to play my first round better and continue doing what I've been doing in my second and third rounds."
Laskin kept a solid pace throughout the tournament, scoring 212 overall, at four over par. The sophomore went four over in the final round to score 76. Laskin birdied four times in the third, and 16 times throughtout the course of the tournament, the third most individually. He finished ranked third in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.25 per hole.
Freshman Trevor Werbylo closed out the tournament tied in 37th at two over par. Werbylo had one of two eagles for the Wildcats in the second round. Sophomore Brad Reeves finished tied in 43rd , three over par. He finished ranked seventh in par 5 scoring, averaging 4.42. Freshman Tianlang Guan was eight over par in the tournament and 10 birdies throught the three days of competition.
Sophomore Briggs Duce and junior Travis Fredborg, who competed as individuals, finished tied in 31st and 43rd.
The Cats are headed back home to compete in the N.I.T, at Omni Tucson National Golf Course on February 25th-26th.
