PALM SPRINGS, Calif. -- No. 13 Arizona defeated St. John's 7-5 and CSUN 8-0 (5 innings) on day 2 of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic to improve to 4-0 in Palm Springs and 12-1 overall in 2018.
UA wraps up the Mary Nutter on Saturday at 1 p.m. MST vs. No. 4 Oklahoma.
Arizona 7, St. John's 5
The Wildcats defeated St. John's 7-5 in Friday's first game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
UA tied a season-high with 14 hits in the game, including multi-hit efforts from
Ashleigh Hughes,
Reyna Carranco,
Dejah Mulipola,
Alyssa Palomino and
Aleah Craighton. The Cats plated seven runs on the 14 hits, but stranded 12 runners on base in the game.

Joelle Krist had two RBI in the contest.
The Cats led St. John's 7-0 and had the potential winning mercy run in scoring position in the fifth before St. John's came through with five runs over a six-batter span in the sixth to make things interesting.
Hanah Bowen, in her second career start, was dominant for five innings. She allowed a double to start the game, the only hit she would allow until a two-run double broke up her shutout in the sixth. In all, Bowen pitched 5.1 innings and allowed four runs on two hits with six strikeouts. The freshman improved to 2-0 on the year.
Alyssa Denham gave up a run on two hits in relief of Bowen before McQuillin struck out the side in the seventh for her first save of the season.
Arizona opened the scoring with a two-out RBI single from
Reyna Carranco in the second.
In the third,
Aleah Craighton hit an RBI triple to give the Cats a 2-0 lead.
The Cats scored four in the fourth to break the game open.
Dejah Mulipola recorded an RBI single and
Aleah Craighton brought in another UA run with a sacrifice fly before
Joelle Krist scored a pair with a single.
UA plated a run in the fifth to take a 7-0 lead before St. John's scored two in the sixth to cut into the lead.
St. John's scored five in the sixth to cut UA's lead to 7-5, but McQuillin shut the door in the seventh to give the Cats the win.
Arizona 8, CSUN 0 (5 innings)
Arizona's fourth-inning six-run two-out rally led the Cats to an 8-0 five-inning victory over CSUN in Friday's second game at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Taylor McQuillin threw a one-hit shutout, marking three straight starts that the junior has tossed a one-hit shutout. She struck out four and walked one while improving to 8-1 on the year.
Arizona's offense, which did not have a hit until
Reyna Carranco's two-out, two-strike, two-run double opened the floodgates, plated eight runs on seven hits. Carranco's double started the first of four straight extra-base hits, including two-run homers by
Jessie Harper and
Alyssa Palomino. UA's lead went from 1-0 to 7-0 in the span of four batters in the fourth.
Harper ended the game with a walkoff single in the bottom of the fifth.
