Arizona Completes Sweep of North Dakota State

TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona Wildcats completed a three-game sweep of North Dakota State on Sunday, topping the Bison 11-2 in front of 2,709 fans at Hi Corbett Field.

Arizona went a perfect 4-0 on its four-game homestand to improve its record to 9-6 on the season. North Dakota State dropped to 6-9 after dropping three straight to Arizona.

The Wildcats got a strong start from sophomore left-hander Randy Labaut, who tossed 5 1/3 innings, giving up six hits, one earned run and one walk, while striking out two. He earned his first win of the season to improve to 1-1 on the season. Four relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit after Labaut exited.

The Wildcats, like they had in their previous three home games, fell behind early Sunday when North Dakota State plated a run in the second to break a scoreless tie.

But Arizona came back with a seven-run bottom of the second to take a lead it would never give back. Freshman designated hitter Tate Soderstrom was hit by a pitch to start the inning and moved up a base when the next batter, Cameron Cannon, singled. Matt Fraizer then advanced both runners a base with a sacrifice bunt.

Shortstop Travis Moniot drove in Soderstrom with an RBI groundout for the first run of the inning. The Cats then went to work with two outs. Mitchell Morimoto walked to put two runners on for Cal Stevenson. Stevenson roped a single to right to plate Cannon and give Arizona the lead. After a Ryan Haug walk, Morimoto scored on a wild pitch. Alfonso Rivas then singled to score Stevenson and Haug and make it 5-1.

Nick Quintana got in on the action with a single and Soderstrom walked to load the bases for Cannon. The second baseman came through with his second hit of the inning to score Rivas and Quintana and complete the seven-run inning.

Labaut gave one run back in the fourth, but then worked around a leadoff double in the fifth to post a scoreless frame. Arizona got him another run in the bottom half when Moniot hit a solo home run to left for his first home run of his Arizona career.

Labaut and senior right-hander Juan Aguilera combined for a scoreless sixth, and again the Cats went back to work in the bottom half, adding two more runs. Soderstrom had an RBI groundout to score Haug and Cannon singled home Rivas.

Arizona added its final run in the ninth when Soderstrom tripled to right to score pinch-runner Seve Romo.

The weekend served as an offensive breakout for the Wildcats. In the three game set, Arizona scored 33 runs on 38 hits, while pounding out 11 extra-base hits on the weekend. That followed last weekend where the Wildcats scored just seven runs in three games against Minnesota, Illinois and Michigan State and had just 18 hits on the weekend. The Cats scored 46 total runs in four home games this week.

The pitching remained stellar as Arizona has still yet to allow more than five runs in a game this season. Arizona's 43 runs allowed through 15 games are the program's fewest since 1974 when the Wildcats allowed just 23 runs through their first 15. Arizona's staff ERA now sits at 2.30.

In Sunday's series finale, the Cats got a three-hit game from Cannon, who finished 3 for 5 with three RBI and a run scored. Haug was 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored and Quintana also added two hits, going 2 for 4 with a run scored.

Arizona returns to action Tuesday at Arizona State in a nonconference affair at Phoenix Municipal Stadium. First pitch is slated for 7 p.m., and the matchup will be televised by the Pac-12 Network.
