Cats in Top Five at the Lamkin Grips Classic
03/12/2018 | Men's Golf
SAN DIEGO, Calif.- The Arizona men's golf team concluded the first day of play at the Lamkin Grips San Diego Classic in fifth place, with a total score of 573 (-3). Leading the Cats were freshman Trevor Werbylo and sophomore David Laskin, who both placed within the top 15 in the individual competition.
"We had a pretty solid day today," commented head coach Jim Anderson. "Our guys are very comfortable and confident shooting under par and despite some missed opportunities on the greens, we have a great chance to post a great finish in a very strong field. Most of our guys hit the ball exceptionally well and if we can putt a little better and keep the ball in position around challenging greens, our final round will be one to remember. We have a very good team and they are eager to show off their abilities."
Werbylo climbed up the leaderboard, where he went from tied for 26th to tied in 9th place, after going four under in the second round of the day. The Tucson native shot even par in the first and then notching six birdies in the second, with nine overall on the day. Werbylo ranks in the top five in par 4 and par 5 scoring, where he is averaging 4.38 per par 5 hole. The freshman's round of 68 is a second best career low 18-hole score, only bested by a 66 posted in the N.I.T.
Laskin was a steady force throughout the first two rounds of the Classic, in which he heads into the second day tied in 12th place. The sophomore ranked in the top fine among all golfers in par 3 and par 4 scoring, and recorded the most pars. Laskin scored 142 and went two under on the day.
Senior George Cunningham finished the first day tied in 28th place, scoring 145 (+1). With eight birdies on the day, the native Tucsonian ranked fourth in birdie scoring and fifth in par 3 scoring.
Sophomore Brad Reeves had a score of 146 (+2) to put him in a tie for 37th and freshman Tianlang Guan scored 151 (+7) and tying for 74th.
Individual Dylan Stein is tied in 60th with a score of 149 (+5).
