Amanda Beard is a member of the 2018 International Swimming Hall of Fame Class. The ceremony will take place in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on May 19, 2018.
Â
Out of Orange County, Calif., she joined a swim team at age 11 and spent every waking moment in the pool. Beard became America's best female breaststroker at 13 and made her first Olympic team a year later. She is now considered one of the best breaststrokers in history.
Â
In 1999, she attended Arizona under Frank Busch for two seasons. As a Wildcat, Beard was a 10-time All-American and won an individual NCAA title. She set the school record in the 100 breast (59.73) and 200 breast (2:07.98) during her tenure. Not until 2010 was she dethroned, and currently sits in third all-time for the 100 breast and second in the 200 breast.
Â
Competing in four different Olympic games and earning seven total medals, Beard is the most decorated Olympic athlete in Arizona school history. Prior to attending Arizona at just 14 years old, at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta, Beard earned a gold medal and two individual silvers. She won gold and set an Olympic record in the 200m breaststroke in 2004 in Athens.
Â
Now Amanda Brown, she is married to Sacha Brown and has two kids, Blaise and Doone Isla. Last year she opened a learn-to-swim company, Beard Swim Co. in Gig Harbor, Washington.
